At least 18 coal miners have died from lethal levels of carbon monoxide, China’s state TV reported Friday.
One miner was found alive following the disaster Friday in the Diaoshidong mine in Chongqing in southwest China, the report said. Rescuers hope at least five others will also be rescued.
At one time, there were more than 5,000 fatalities a year, making China’s coal mining industry the most dangerous in the world. It was drastically overhauled 15 years ago, making it much safer.
