Brain surgeons and rocket scientists are no smarter than the rest of us: study - New York Post

The legendary brains of doctors, scientists and engineers are no different than those of any other lowly profession — they just do the work.

A study of nearly 400 scientific and medical professionals has revealed that stereotyped smartypants — i.e. brain surgeons and rocket scientists — possess no upper hand when it comes to the skills needed to succeed in logical mathematical professions.

“It is not that they are better at everything — but they are better at certain things that make them good at what they do,” said study author Aswin Chari, the Guardian reported.

Researchers enlisted 329 rocket scientists and and 72 neurosurgeons to tackle a dozen tasks via the Great British Intelligence Test (GBIT), an online cognitive exam constructed by Imperial College London and the BBC. Age, sex and years worked in their respective fields were also taken into account.

“It is also possible that other professions might deserve to be on that pedestal.”

The tasks measured their skill level in several areas of cognition, including planning, rapid memory recall, emotional processing, and compared their results to 18,427 other adults. Their results were published in BMJ, for a special edition titled “Christmas 2021: What if…?”

Tests showed that each professions correlated with one area of intelligence more than the others.

For example, neuroscientists scored higher in language-based problem solving, while aerospace engineers were better at spatial reasoning. But their overall averages were on part with the general public.

Chari, a neurosurgical trainee at Great Ormond Street hospital, told the Guardian, “Essentially what we think it shows is that everyone has a range of skills, some people are better at some things and other people are better at other things, and it is very difficult to be better in everything across the board.”

So if it’s not rocket science, or brain surgery — what is it?

The age-old question continues, researchers said, adding: “It is also possible that other professions might deserve to be on that pedestal.”

Adblock test (Why?)
